Meet Sophie's family

Melanie Lynskey plays Sophie's mother, Elizabeth, and Max Greenfield plays her father, Ted. Steve Buscemi is her grandfather, Dale. The musical brings us into Sophie's school life, while these relationships bring the story home.

Where the story began

Writer Laura Hankin drew on her own experience of leading a school musical while her mother's cancer returned. It's the inspiration for an original story, rather than a literal account of her life. Hankin wrote the screenplay with Hart and Jordan Horowitz. Adam Sandler is among the producers; Sunny Sandler plays the lead.
