Sources & methodology

Stream the Movie is an independent guide to movies, TV series and where to watch them in the United States. Here’s how we build it, and what the information on each page means.

Links marked “Affiliate link” may earn us a commission from qualifying purchases. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. The partner decides which purchases or sign-ups qualify; a click does not itself establish a commission.

Partner tracking does not change the order of our listings or the title you open. Our own daily counters do not identify visitors. When you follow an affiliate link, Amazon may use its own tracking and cookies under its privacy and programme terms.

Before you subscribe or pay

Stream the Movie is an independent guide, not a streaming service or subscription seller. We do not provide streams or take payment for viewing. Availability is not guaranteed: listings use dated source information, which may be delayed or incorrect, and are not a live playback test. Catalogs, prices and access can differ by country, plan, season and episode.

Before subscribing, renting or buying, confirm the title, your plan, season or episode coverage, and the final price directly with the service. The streaming service or retailer handles access, billing, cancellations and refund requests under its own terms and applicable law.

Official trailers

Selected title guides include a manually matched trailer from the studio, distributor or streaming service’s official YouTube channel. A season trailer is labelled with its season. A trailer is not evidence that the full movie or series is available from any service.

The YouTube player is loaded only when you choose “Load trailer from YouTube”. Before that, we show a local placeholder without YouTube video, image or player requests. Loading connects to YouTube and may allow it to process data under its own policies. We use its privacy-enhanced player; this does not mean that all third-party processing is disabled. You can close the player or follow the direct YouTube link instead. We do not download or host the video or use trailer frames as film posters. Uploaders can remove videos or restrict playback and embedding.

The facts behind a film

Our structured film facts come primarily from Wikidata, an open knowledge base. Wikidata’s structured data is made available under CC0.

This includes information such as titles, release years, runtimes, directors, cast, and genres. A film’s page links to its Wikidata record so you can explore the source. Some facts may be incomplete, and runtimes or release dates can vary between editions and countries.

The “metadata updated” date refers to the movie facts in our catalog. It does not mean that streaming availability was checked on that date.

Where recorded, the title facts also include an original title and whole-series season or episode counts. Series counts show when the fact records were imported; they may have changed and do not describe which seasons or episodes a service offers. Conflicting, uncertain or part-specific counts are withheld.

Watch options need their own check

Our public discovery pages include titles that have had at least one US watch listing supported by approved source data. We handle title facts and streaming listings separately.

A search result or a provider page by itself is not enough to confirm an active US offer. Unconfirmed discoveries stay out of public watch options. Once admitted, a title’s guide remains available when its observations age or a known offer ends. Titles that have never had a qualifying listing remain outside public discovery. A known ended or removed listing no longer gets an active watch button. Absence from this guide does not establish that a title is unavailable everywhere.

Each listing shows its original source observation date. After seven days, we label the observation as older; this is an age indicator and does not mean the service has removed the title. We retain the original date and do not make an old observation look newly checked. These are dated records, not a continuous check of playback. Provider catalogs, subscription plans, prices, and regional rights may change afterward. Follow the provider link to confirm the current details.

Streaming availability data

Streaming availability information is provided by Streaming Availability API by Movie of the Night. These listings show “Source observation” or “Older listing · last observed” alongside the date. We keep the country, service and offer type separate so an extra channel is not confused with an included subscription.

For series, an offer may cover only certain seasons or episodes. Free offers can include advertising. Check the service for the available episodes, plan requirements and current price.

Different ways to watch

We keep the type of offer visible because a subscription, a rental, and an add-on are different things.

Subscription
Recorded through the stated subscription service or plan; confirm current inclusion.
Free
Recorded without a viewing charge; confirm current access.
Free with ads
Recorded without a viewing charge, with advertising.
Add-on
Requires an extra channel or subscription package.
Rent
A payment for a limited viewing period.
Buy
A purchase subject to the provider’s terms.

Search without an account

Choose streaming services, genres, release years, original language, country and runtime directly in the search. Selected services are search filters; we do not know which subscriptions you own. Your choices are included in the results URL, so you can bookmark or share that link.

Search works without JavaScript. Stream the Movie does not create a profile, store these choices in cookies or local storage, or send requests to streaming services as you type. Queries are handled against our local catalog.

Services and ways to watch are matched together: Netflix plus Subscription finds an included Netflix offer. An extra channel is kept separate from a standard subscription. Genre and language filters depend on the title facts available in our catalog.

Simple site statistics

We count page views, clicks between pages and departures through our streaming links in daily totals. A small script sends page and internal-link counts to this site; it does not send your search terms, selected filters or your browser’s referrer URL. Streaming departures are counted when our watch link redirects.

These statistics do not use cookies, local storage, IP addresses or persistent visitor identifiers. We keep daily totals and, when event logging is enabled, anonymous pageview and link-click records with the page, destination and UTC date and time. We retain statistics for 90 days through scheduled cleanup. Access to the statistics API requires a private key. They are approximate counts of activity, not unique people or proof that someone watched or purchased a title. Hosting and security logs are separate from these counters.

Our private live dashboard estimates active browser tabs from visible-page signals sent every 20 seconds. Each document creates a random identifier in memory only; it is not saved in cookies or browser storage and changes on navigation. The server keeps only a keyed hash with the public page and latest signal time. Hidden or closed pages send a best-effort departure; signals stop counting after 60 seconds without an update, and expired records are removed during collection, reporting and scheduled cleanup. These temporary records are separate from historical pageview events. Multiple tabs or a lost departure signal can overcount briefly; this does not identify people or prove they are human.

How spotlight picks are chosen

“Selected picks” are editorial starting points from our recorded listings, both overall and within a genre. When a collection has enough activity, “Most viewed in 30 days” ranks its eligible title guides by page views during UTC today and the previous 29 days. Counts refresh periodically and may be affected by caching or automated traffic; they are not streaming plays or a measure of audience size.

Genre picks use recorded genre facts. A featured position does not guarantee current access, and paid links do not determine the ranking. Check the dated listing and the service’s current terms before choosing how to watch.

Sources we can stand behind

We review sources for permitted use before automated collection. Source records track licensing, commercial use, automated access, attribution requirements, and review status. Only approved sources can be used for automated imports.

Original editorial descriptions, when included, are kept separate from imported film facts. We do not reproduce third-party movie synopses or artwork without appropriate rights.

Original context, with factual checks

Selected title guides include original editorial context checked against the structured title facts. Some guides also use official title information, with links to those sources beside the guide. We check the title and original premiere year, and relevant runtime, people or categories where supported. This is viewing context, not a first-hand review or a claim that we have watched the title.

The reviewed context is bound to the recorded title facts. If they change, the affected text is withheld until it can be checked again. Its editorial check date is separate from both the metadata date and the streaming observation dates; it does not mean an external source is continuously monitored. Imported facts and source attribution remain visible. Not every title has an editorial guide yet.

A growing guide, focused on the US

This growing guide brings together movies and TV series with dated, source-supported US watch observations. Coverage is not exhaustive; a missing title is not proof that it cannot be streamed.

Genres come from recorded title facts. Categories can overlap and some titles have no genre facts yet. Related titles share recorded genres, cast or creators; suggestions do not depend on a viewing profile.
